Bull thistle remains green and can continue to grow throughout the winter, a trait few plants have. This aggressive plant has seeds that are viable for 1 to 2 years. It is unpalatable for wildlife and can form dense patches especially indisturbed areas.
Hand pulling can be successful if the whole root is removed. Use gloves as plants are sharp.
Mow just before flowering.
Spot spray young plants in the fall.
The flowers of this plant have an abundance of nectar, attracting many pollinator species such as butterflies and bumblebees. All parts of the plant are edible and can be used in soups and teas. The flowers can also be collected and used as a dye.

Typically accompanied by other low growing plants, this lovely plant adds a pop of color to the garden. They are among the earliest bloomers in a prairie. Historically the plant has been used to brew a weak sassafras tea. A brew was also used in sweat lodges as a bodywash for aches and pains.
