This plant grows aggressively in wet areas, crowding out native plants. It grows in dense stand strapping sediments, allowing it to extend its growth into open water. It is not uncommon for a plant to produce 1 to 2 million seeds that can live for several years in the soil. Early detection is essential to slow the aggressive spread of Purple loosestrife.
Spot spray with herbicide.
Hand pull young plants and burn or take the remains to a landfill.
Prairie loosestrife is often a common plant in native seed mixtures. It offers a vibrant yellow hue and produces a yellow fruit from the flowers. It grows well in moist environments and attracts many pollinators.

Just as the name implies, this plant loves being around water. It can be used in drainage ditches and where water pools in the yard. The bright flowers attract monarch butterflies and can be easily cut for long lasting flower arrangements.
